1‑1 vs 2‑1 Personal Training: Which Is Right For You?

Neither option is a compromise. 1‑1 and 2‑1 are both fully private, fully coached sessions at Yard Fitness. The question isn't which one is "better," it's which one fits how you actually want to train.

1‑1: all the attention, on your terms

With 1‑1 training, every rep, every rest period, and every adjustment is about you. Your trainer isn't splitting focus, so the pace and programming can move exactly as fast, or as carefully, as you need. It's the better fit if you're working through something specific: an injury, a very particular goal, or a schedule that doesn't easily line up with anyone else's.

2‑1: the same privacy, split with someone else

2‑1 training is still fully private and fully coached, it's not a group class, just two of you in the same session. What changes is the price per person, and for a lot of people, the motivation. Training alongside a partner, friend, or colleague adds a bit of accountability and company that can make it easier to actually show up on the days you don't feel like it.

What actually happens when goals don't match

This is the most common worry with 2‑1, what if one of you wants to lose weight and the other wants to get stronger? In practice it matters less than people expect. A good 2‑1 session runs two parallel programmes in the same time slot, not one shared workout. You're both being coached toward your own goals, just sharing the space, the trainer's time, and the cost. What has to match is roughly your fitness level and availability, not your goals.

Can you switch between the two?

Yes, plenty of clients do. Some start 2‑1 with a partner to ease into training with company, then move to 1‑1 once they want the session built purely around them. Others do the opposite: start 1‑1 to work through something specific, then bring a partner in once that's sorted and the motivation of training together becomes the priority. Neither is locked in, sessions are booked in blocks, so switching is just a conversation, not a contract change.
